AR application

in marketing, culture, education & tourism

Augmented Reality (AR, also known as Mixed Reality) allows real and virtual worlds to merge. In this process, virtual content on the smartphone or tablet seamlessly blends with the real world. This means that reality is enhanced by digital elements.

AR software enables you to:

  • Inspire young target groups
  • View products from an online store at home
  • Display additional information about products, projects, sights or exhibits
  • Illustrate and explain processes

How AR can be applied

Current examples from practice

E-commerce & marketing

With Augmented Reality, products can be presented realistically and in their original size. AR product models are revolutionizing the shopping experience by enabling virtual product tests and interactive try-outs. Whether as an interactive AR viewer in the e-commerce store or a QR code in a print catalog: Furniture retailer Porta, for example, is increasing customer loyalty with an immersive shopping experience and has been able to take its marketing strategy to a new level.

Tourism & culture

In tourism, AR offers the opportunity to present content in an entertaining and interactive way. Museums and exhibitions such as the SCHOTT Villa, but also trekking regions and educational trails such as the “natura jenensis” can be enhanced in this way and better appeal to younger target groups. Here you can find mascots as virtual guides, but also timid animals, rare plants, extinct creatures or even long-abandoned castles in AR.

Books & learning

Books can get an additional dimension through AR content. Apart from static objects, processes and movements can also be visualized in Augmented Reality. This makes textbook content more exciting, easier to understand and more memorable. The children's book “Regentröpfchens Reise” (rain droplet's journey) also uses AR illustrations to convey educational content on the topics of weather and climate.

Art

Augmented Reality makes it possible to visualize, interact and understand works of art such as paintings, sculptures and installations as if they were right in front of you - in virtual exhibitions or anywhere in the world. In a hybrid vernissage by artist Pedro Martin Rojo, you could place the virtual paintings at home and discover details, backgrounds and stories behind each masterpiece.

Real estate

What will a planned property look like in actual size at the actual construction site? How will it look in relation to the surrounding buildings and facilities? In the construction and real estate sector, AR technology offers the possibility of impressive visualizations that leave no room for speculation. For the Eichplatz area in Jena, this made it much easier to make and communicate planning decisions.

Benefits of Augmented Reality

and spark the interest of potential customers with exciting AR content

Effective transfer of learning content

through game-based and collaborative learning with virtual models and simulations

Web AR or AR app

Which AR application is better?

Augmented Reality content can be delivered in different ways. Some AR applications run directly via an internet browser (Web AR), while others require a special AR app. As an all-in-one platform, rooom runs both with and without an app - depending on the use case.

Web AR application: 3D Product Viewer bicycle

Web AR

Web-based AR applications such as the 3D Product Viewer make it possible to place objects in a real environment with just one click - for example via an AR viewer in an online store or QR code. The virtual object appears to be right in front of you in its original size - without having to install an app and without special technology. This is also called markerless AR, as no specific marker or trigger needs to be defined.

  • For e-commerce and online shops
  • For marketing campaigns, trade fairs & events
  • For placing virtual furniture, artworks, etc.
AR app: Interactive city guide Weimar

AR app

Analog content, such as books or newspapers, can also be brought to life virtually with the help of a marker-based AR app like rooomBooks. A trigger, the so-called marker, such as a catalog image, a poster or a business card, is captured with the camera of the smartphone or tablet. With the help of a corresponding AR app, the respective image or object is transformed into a lifelike AR model. Videos, animations or picture galleries can also be called up in this way.

  • For virtual tours, museums, exhibitions and experience trails
  • For print media and books

Augmented Reality requirements

What hardware do you need?

You don't need much to experience 3D content in Augmented Reality. Unlike Virtual Reality applications, which cannot be accessed without VR glasses, headsets or wearables are only a nice-to-have for enjoying AR applications. A device with a camera, a display and powerful processors is all you need to view such content. Mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets with modern operating systems are usually completely sufficient as hardware equipment.

FAQ: Augmented Reality

How to create Augmented Reality?

To create your own content in Augmented Reality, you need one thing above all: a 3D model. There are different options for this:

  • Upload product photos or 3D data
  • 3D scanner app
  • Professional 3D scanning studio
How does Augmented Reality work?

To get an AR projection, you first need to capture a marker or QR code with the camera of a mobile device. Then point the camera at a flat background and place the object (e.g. product, exhibit or avatar). That's it!

How much does Augmented Reality Software cost?

With rooomBooks, the use of Augmented Reality software is possible from 15 €. For this price you add content such as a 3D model, photo or video to any print product via CMS, which can then be viewed in Augmented Reality using a mobile device.
